CSU to pay $2.5 million in shooting death of mentally disordered CSU San Bernardino student

In December 2012 at CSU San Bernardino, a dorm room encounter between mentally disordered graduate student Bartholomew Williams and campus police resulted in the student's death.

Officers responded to a disturbance call, and graduate student Williams resisted their efforts to transport him for an involuntary psychiatric assessment.

As reported in the LA Times (CSU to pay $2.5 million to family of slain mentally ill student), an attorney for William's family claimed that Williams was beaten and then shot to death.

Officers reported that the encounter "became a prolonged, violent struggle" and that they feared for their safety (Cal State San Bernardino police kill student during struggle).

Settling a lawsuit filed by Williams' family, the CSU has agreed to pay $2.5 million, to revise the campus crisis-intervention procedures, and to require officers to attend 32 hours of mental health crisis intervention training.
